Necklace Length Guide

Find the right necklace length for your design, your customers, and your collection.

Compare lengths in inches and centimeters, learn how to measure a necklace, and understand what to confirm before custom production.

Necklace Length Chart: Inches to Centimeters

Necklace length is measured around the necklace, not vertically down the chest. Use the chart below as a starting point, then check the fit on your intended wearer.

The same length can sit differently depending on neck circumference, body proportions, chain thickness, and pendant design.

Length Exact Conversion General Styling Reference
14 inches
35.56 cm
Close-fitting styles; check neck circumference carefully
16 inches
40.64 cm
Short necklaces and the upper layer of a necklace stack
18 inches

Everyday chains and pendant necklaces
20 inches
50.80 cm

24 inches
60.96 cm

Sizing note: These are exact unit conversions, not production specifications. A 45 cm necklace and an 18-inch necklace differ by 0.72 cm. Confirm the required measurement and unit before ordering.

How to Measure a Necklace

Measure a Necklace You Already Like

Open the necklace and lay it straight on a flat surface without stretching it. Measure from one end of the finished necklace to the other, including the clasp and end fittings. Record any extension chain separately.

Check the Fit with String

Place a non-stretch string around your neck and adjust it to the position you prefer. Mark the ends, lay the string flat, and measure it with a ruler.

Confirm with the Actual Design

Try a sample with the intended chain thickness and pendant. A string helps estimate length, but a finished necklace may drape differently.

Chain Length, Extender Length & Pendant Drop

Chain Necklace Size Chart for Men and Women provide by Direct Supplier

Base Necklace Length

The base length is the finished necklace length before the extension chain. Confirm whether the clasp and end fittings are included in the stated measurement.

Extension Chain

An extender provides an adjustable wearing range. For example, a 40 cm base necklace with a 5 cm extender offers an approximate adjustment range of 40–45 cm.

Pendant Drop

Pendant drop is measured separately from the necklace length. Specify the distance from the pendant’s attachment point to its lowest point, including the bail where applicable.

Example specification:
Base necklace: 40 cm, including clasp and end fittings
Extender: 5 cm
Adjustable range: approximately 40–45 cm
Pendant drop: 2 cm, including bail

A 2 cm pendant adds a visible drop below its attachment point; it does not turn a 40 cm necklace into a 42 cm necklace.

Choose a Length for Your Necklace Design

Fine Chains & Small Pendants

Compare shorter and medium lengths on your target wearer. Check how the pendant sits against the neckline and whether an extender would improve flexibility.

Chunky Chains & Beaded Necklaces

Allow for the thickness of the design. Larger links and beads can create a closer fit than a fine chain of the same measured length.

LCC

Start with different lengths, such as 40, 45, and 50 cm, then test the complete set. Adjust the spacing for pendant size, chain thickness, and the intended look.

Specify Necklace Sizing Before Custom Production

A clear size specification helps your brand, designer, and manufacturer work from the same reference.

For your OEM/ODM necklace project, share:

  • Target wearer and intended fit

  • Base necklace length and measurement unit

  • Whether the clasp and end fittings are included

  • Extension chain length

  • Chain style and width, or bead diameter

  • Pendant dimensions and drop

  • Required length tolerance

  • Quantity required for each length

Confirm these details on the sample and specification sheet before approving bulk production.
